Windows xp replacing hard drive

This time? It would start to boot then BSOD with x7 errors. Once booted, I used a driver hunter to install 63 driver updates.

I only had 2 devices for which I had to find drivers. Had I done so in the first place it would have saved me hours of hassle. Of course, reinstalling is the best method if you have no problem wiping the current OS, but these methods help if you only want to reinstall as an absolute last resort.

My M MB failed completely. I am now using Ubuntu I have a duel HD on my computer. I was not able to make the changes before the old MB failure. But I would need some advice before I attempt it. Good solution. Windows is up!!! Thanks again. Worked well, without a hitch. After changing the specs in the device manager, moved the hard disk drive with windows xp to a new pc.

Made it the boot drive, went very smooth. Works good, only thing is i cant get windows xp to activate on the new machine it shows the box in the corner saying windows is not activated and when i click activate windows it says this page cannot be displayed, its like the activation web page inst around anymore.

Rather than copying an Intel x64 iastor. My work-around was by renaming the iastor. Restarted PC and worked. Thanks for the article. Thank you for sharing. I downloaded, burned, ran Mini Win XP of the latest version Am I missing something here? I believe the issue has more to do with the system hardware such as motherboard and chipset and the now quite old drivers that are installed in Mini XP.

Hi Thank You so much for your help. After 26 years in IT, your suggestions here have helped me immensely and put an end to my misery , I am over joyed by your blog here.

Keep up the good work. Thank You, your the ONE. All my best wishes to you.. I will remember this for the rest of my life. So simple and it saved me so much time and great pain… A million thanks from Bulgaria! You are a genius!! Had to migrate my system onto a new machine but no access to vital applications for reinstallation. Installing that driver onto my cloned disk did the trick!!

It works great! I moved the HDD from my suddenly not working laptop to another working one, All ok! You saved me a lot of time.

Thank u so much. Worked like a charm. It worked for me. Thank you from Sweden. Thank you by the post. But now have a problem. Any idea how to solve this? It works. Then this worked a charm. Worked on XP, Vista, and W7 and go me into each. It brought a tear to my eye when it worked. This allowed me to get into my Vista OS enough to download the new drivers needed. It is Great thing it works excellent only thing bothering that the key board and mouse does not work until a got into safe mode thanks very much.

Hi guys. I just have done opposite, based on your article. Your article is talking about moving from Intel into AMD platform. However I ran into that loop problem. SO happy! It will need this one:. Clone the drive using Norton Ghost. From the main menu, select Ghost Advanced, and then click the Clone button. Set your source drive.

This is the drive that you are copying FROM. Double check to make sure that you have the right drive selected, otherwise you may copy the blank hard drive to your old one, overwriting all of your data. Clone the drive using HDClone. Remove your old drive. Make sure that your jumper settings are set correctly on the new drive. Power on the system. Ensure that everything boots normally and functions as it should. If your hard disk is not detected, make sure that your jumper settings are set to Master on the hard drive.

Once you know that everything is working OK, you can put the old drive back in and format it. You may be asked to reactivate your copy of Windows. This will not always happen, but if it does, simply call the number provided and Microsoft will provide you with a reactivation code over the phone.

If continuing to use the old computer on the same network, you may have IP address conflicts. Helpful 0 Not Helpful 2. My laptop came with it, and I don't think I can take it out so to speak.

I'm currently learning about reinstallation, from BigBrother in fact. I know you have to take out all attached peripherals but I don't know if I can even take out the 5 in 1 on my Inspiron M since it seems "part" of the laptop, and not something that can be taken "out. I have disconnected the lead to the motherboard dimension which I assume is the correct thing to do.

Not sure how easy this is on a laptop. Since it was a Dell technician, they will not send him back out to work with software issues. Even if the onsite tech caused the software issue. There are at several ways to avoid mixing up drive letters during a Windows re-installation when there are additional drives in your system. If possible, disable the device s in BIOS. This can often be easier than disconnecting them from the system.

Simplest of all -- After formatting the partition on which you will be installing Windows, simply restart the computer using the Windows CD, and start the reinstallation over. Do not re-format the partition.

Just leave the file system as it is and finish the reinstallation. The Windows reinstallation routine will assign the correct drive letter to the partition. Is it necessary to unplug everything and not just the peripheral attachments through USB cable?

In the new Computer Management window that has opened, select Disk Management which is under the Storage heading in the tree on the left hand side. Select the items that are currently set to C, D, etc that are not your actual hard drive and right click.
